SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UC Davis finished fifth in 6 minutes, 57.47 seconds on Sunday afternoon in the grand final of the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay; a race that separated the top five boats by just over five seconds.
The Aggies' novice eight also raced on Sunday, placing fifth in its petite final om 7:37.51.
UC Davis' varsity eight advanced to the grand final after placing second in its elimination heat on Saturday. The Aggies were timed in 7:03.06 during their preliminary race, improving that clocking by six seconds in the final.
Central Florida raced to the early lead over the first 1,000 meters on Sunday but UC Davis - which was fourth after the first piece - went 1:38.77 over the second 500 meters, the fastest split of any boat during the race. That vaulted the Aggies into second place at the midway point but they dropped to fourth heading into the final quarter. Miami then edged UC Davis by less than second at the finish for fourth place.
San Diego State won the Cal Cup in 6:52.40 and was followed closely by Central Florida (6:54.25); Sacramento State (6:54.76), Miami (6:56.92) and UC Davis. Kansas State finished seventh in 7:07.50.
The Aggies' novice eight started strong in its petite final on Sunday morning, crossing the first 500 meters in third-place after covering the distance in 1:48.49. At that point, UC Davis trailed leader Notre Dame by just over two seconds. However, UC Davis slipped to fourth behind Sacramento State midway and then was edged by UC San Diego by just .13 at the finish line.
Notre Dame won the race in 7:19.49.
The varsity eight returns to action on April 16 when it travels cross country to participate in the Knecht Cup at Camden, N.J.
