SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's varsity eight crew overcame Sacramento State down the stretch, passing the rival Hornets and capturing the petite final of the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay on Sunday morning.

The Aggies' novice eight, meanwhile, led early in its petite final, eventually placing fourth in 7 minutes, 15.23 seconds.

The varsity eight, which beat the Hornets twice over the weekend, finished the 2,000-meter race in 7:09.6, just ahead of Sacramento State which crossed in 7:10.83. St. Joseph's was third in 7:14.49 and Kansas State was fourth in 7:15.29.

UC Davis trailed the Hornets by less than a second after 500 meters and was behind by nearly two seconds midway. However, a faster split over the third 500-meter piece helped put the Aggies closer and they continued to close, winning the petite final by more than a second.

The UC Davis novice eight held a slight lead against Wisconsin after the first 500 meters of its petite final on Sunday and was in second to the Badgers heading into the final 500. However, the Aggies were timed in 1:58.58 over the final quarter of the race while Texas and USC posted faster times to pass UC Davis. Wisconsin won the race in 7:11.40 with Texas crossing in 7:13.65.

The San Diego Crew Classic is one of the largest regattas in the country, featuring men's and women's teams from throughout the United States.

UC Davis is at Gonzaga on April 17.
