San Diego Crew Classic Information

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's rowing varsity eight easily won its preliminary heat of the Collegiate II/III competition at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and will look on Sunday to repeat top honors won last year at the regatta.

The Aggies' novice eight also had a strong day, finishing third in its preliminary heat and will race in the petite final of the novice eight division on Sunday morning.

The competition is the first for the Aggie eights since opening the spring season on Mar. 6 at the Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament.

On Saturday, the varsity eight covered the 2,000-meter course at the San Diego Crew Classic - being held at Mission Bay - in 7 minutes, 37.8 seconds, easily in front of UC San Diego, which was second in 7:52.83. Humboldt State was a close third in 7:54.12 while Chapman finished fourth.

The same four squads will race for the Collegiate II/III title on Sunday at 1:50 p.m. The NCAA Division II defending champion Aggies won both their races at the regatta last season.

The novices, in the second of three heats and pitted against traditional rowing power Washington, were barely edged by UCLA for second place. Washington won the race in 7:46.60 and the Bruins were second in 7:51.07, just ahead of the Aggies, who crossed in 7:51.53. San Diego was a distant fourth and was followed by UC Santa Barbara and Sacramento State.

The Aggies will race in the novice eight petite final at 8 a.m. on Sunday against St. Joseph's, Stanford, San Diego, USC and UC San Diego.

The San Diego Crew Classic features many of the top collegiate teams in the country.
