San Diego Crew Classic Information

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's rowing varsity eight crew won the Collegiate II/III final on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic with a time of 7 minutes, 9.5 seconds, winning decisively for the second straight day at Mission Bay.

The novice eight boat, which finished third in its preliminary heat on Saturday, had another strong race on Sunday, placing second in the petite final after being timed in 7:19.05, edging USC which was third in 7:19.74.

The varsity eight led from the start in the Collegiate II/III final, also called the Gilman/Muliken Cup, covering the first quarter of the 2,000-meter race in 1:45.24 and opening a three-second lead over UC San Diego. The Aggies stretched the lead to seven seconds midway and 13 seconds heading into the final piece. UC San Diego finished nearly 20 seconds behind UC Davis, clocking a time of 7:28.78. Humboldt State was third and Chapman placed fourth.

UC Davis won easily for the second straight day, defeating the same four crews on Saturday when the Aggies finished 15 seconds in front of UC San Diego. UC Davis' crew at the San Diego Crew Classic consisted of Katie Borg, Dawn Leppert, Alison Prehn, Marisa O'Brien, Kerry Byrne, Kelly Sweerus, Brooke Forniciari, Shelly Best and Sara Miller. UC Davis won the Collegiate II/III final last year as well.

The Aggies' novice eight trailed St. Joseph's by just under two seconds midway through Sunday morning's petite final, with USC less than a second behind UC Davis. The Aggies stayed close to St. Joseph's the rest of the way and were strong enough to hold off the Trojans down the stretch for second place. St. Joseph's won the race in 7:14.03.

Stanford was fourth in the race, UC San Diego placed fifth and the University of San Diego was sixth.

UC Davis will battle rival Sacramento State for the Jean Runyon Cup next Saturday at Lake Natoma.
