RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Sacramento State's women's rowing varsity eight edged UC Davis by 3.1 seconds on Sunday morning at the CSUS Aquatics Center at Lake Natoma, claiming the Jean Runyon Cup for the fifth consecutive year.

The Hornets covered the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 7.3 seconds, crossing the finish line ahead the Aggies, who were timed close behind in 7:10.4. UC Davis was trying to end a string of four straight wins by Sacramento State in the annual dual for the Jean Runyon Cup, but the Hornets were able to hold of the Aggies in a race that was held during heavy rains. The teams started battling for the Jean Runyon Cup in 1997. The Hornets beat the Aggies by 6.1 seconds in 2002.

UC Davis picked up its lone win Sunday in the last race as its second novice eight clocked a time of 7:18.0, just ahead of the Hornets' novice eight, which crossed in 7:19.6. Sacramento State also beat the Aggies in the second varsity eight race, finishing in 7:18.5. The Aggies' novice eight finished second in the race in 7:21.4, followed by the UC Davis second varsity eight in 7:37.6.

UC Davis returns to action next Saturday at Redwood Shores, battling UCLA.
