CAMDEN, N.J. - The UC Davis women's varsity eight finished fifth in its grand final at the Knecht Cup on Saturday afternoon after winning its semifinal earlier in the day, capping a busy day of rowing at the large regatta that took place on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

UC Davis was timed in 7 minutes, 5.6 seconds during the championship race after finishing first in its semifinal race in 6:55.7. The grand final was the third race of the day for the Aggies, who began the day with a preliminary heat which qualified them for their semifinal. Results from that race were unavailable.

In the semifinal, UC Davis posted a four-second win over Tulsa, which was second in 6:59.0 with Colgate taking third in 7:01.9. The Aggies then advanced to their second grand final this season after also earning a spot in the Cal Cup championship race at the San Diego Crew Classic in early April. The second-seeded Aggies finished fifth in Saturday's final, which was won by top-seeded Gonzaga in 6:48.3. Rhode Island (6:54.2), Boston College (6:58.6) and Kansas (7:03.2) finished in front of UC Davis with Tulsa placing nine seconds back of the Aggies.

Rowing for UC Davis were Katherine Cobarrubia at coxswain, Sunny Caldwell at stroke, Sarah Kay at seven, May Roberts at six, Vanessa Cuellar at five, Erica Southard at four, Laura Kelleher at three, Amber Buntin at two and Angela Bruno at bow.

The Knecht Cup featured more than 50 schools from across the country with 29 entered in the varsity eight competition. The regatta was originally scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday but inclement weather forecasts for Sunday forced race organizers to hold all the races on Saturday.

The Aggies also had rowers competing at the Lexington Cup, hosted by Santa Clara, but those results are currently unavailable.

UC Davis will return to action on WIRA Championships on Apr. 28-29 at Lake Natoma.
