Varsity Eight Wins Petite at WIRA Championships; Second Novice Eight Captures Gold

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - - The UC Davis women's varsity eight edged UC Santa Barbara and finished first in the petite final at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Natoma on Sunday while the Aggies' second novice eight captured a gold medal with its grand final win.

UC Davis' second varsity eight and novice eight also competed in grand finals on Sunday with both earning third-place finishes.

The Aggies' varsity eight was third in its preliminary heat on Saturday, narrowly missing a berth in the grand final. UC Davis made the most of its opportunity in the petite final, covering the 2,000-meter course at Lake Natoma in 6 minutes, 53.7 seconds. That was enough to hold of UCSB which was second in 6:54.9. San Diego State was third in 6:56.6.

The second novice eight posted a convincing win in its grand final on Sunday, winning with a time of 7:29.4, nearly 12 seconds ahead of second-place Orange Coast College which finished in 7:37.0. Long Beach State took third in 7:38.7.

UC Davis' second varsity eight was third in its grand final with a time of 6:59.7, narrowly missing the runner-up position after Sacramento State crossed in 6:59.6. Gonzaga won the close race in 6:57.8. The Aggies' novice eight finished third in 7:11.9, four seconds behind second-place San Diego State and nearly two seconds in front of fourth-place San Diego.

UC Davis returns to Lake Natoma on May 14 for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, a day before participating in the Pac-10 Championships, also at Lake Natoma.
