UC Davis Take Fourth In Varsity Eight Grand Final At WIRA

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The UC Davis women's varsity eight placed fourth in Sunday's grand final at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Natoma as Loyola Marymount posted a four-second win to capture top honors in the race.

UC Davis, which was second in Saturday's preliminary heat that earned it a spot in Sunday's grand final, was timed in 7 minutes, 3.2 seconds over the 2,000-meter course. The Aggies were 8 seconds behind Gonzaga, which was third in 6:55.9, and 6 seconds ahead of Puget Sound, which was fifth in 7:09.7.

Loyola Marymount posted the grand final win, finishing in 6:51.6 and beat hosting Sacramento State which was second in 6:55.1. UC Santa Barbara was the remaining crew in the race and the Gauchos crossed in 7:12.9.

UC Davis posted a third-place finish in the second varsity eight grand final after advancing to the race with a second-place finish in Saturday's preliminaries. The Aggie improved their time from a day earlier by five seconds, clocking a time of 7:06.8 in the grand final.

Sacramento State won in 6:59.0, Gonzaga was second in 7:04.2, LMU was fourth in 7:09.9 and San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara were fifth and sixth, respectively. UC Davis also raced in the varsity four grand final, finishing fifth in 7:54.9. Seattle Pacific was first in 7:32.8.

In the varsity eight boat for the Aggies were coxswain Katie Borg, Kari Harris, Cassie Drotman, Becky Anderson, Marisa O'Brien, Kelli Kramer, Kalie Benson, Elisabeth Patterson and Analiese Zoller.

The varsity four boat competed with coxswain Niaree Hopelian, Carrie Moore, Laura Syms, Ashley Lawrence and Sadie Polen.
