Saturday's Complete WIRA Championships Results

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - UC Davis posted a 15-second victory in its preliminary heat of the women's novice eight race at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Natoma, leading three Aggies boats during Saturday's competition.

Besides the novice eight, UC Davis also placed second during its prelim of the second varsity eight competition, while the varsity eight was fourth in its heat.

The novice boat led the Aggie rowers on Saturday, finishing the 2,000-meter course at Lake Natoma with a time of 7 minutes, 00.6 seconds, well ahead of Pacific Lutheran, which was a distant second in 7:15.7. Loyola Marymount was a close third, Puget Sound was fourth and UC Irvine came in fifth as the next four boats behind the Aggies finished within five seconds of each other.

UC Davis battled host Sacramento State closely during the second varsity eight competition, but the Hornets were able to hold off the Aggies, winning by just under five seconds with a time of 7:22.9. UC Davis was timed in 7:27.5, UC Irvine was third in 7:32.5 and Santa Clara was fourth.

The Aggies' varsity eight had the toughest showing of the day, finishing fourth in its preliminary heat with a time of 7:08.6, five seconds in front of fifth-place Long Beach State and just a second behind third-place Pacific Lutheran, which was clocked in 7:07.5. Loyola Marymount won the heat in 6:57.9, the only boat in the race to break the 7-minute barrier.

The WIRA Championships conclude on Sunday.
