RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - UC Davis' women's novice eight captured its second victory in as many days as the Aggies raced to a convincing win in its grand final Sunday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Natoma.

The novice eight was one of four Aggie crews in action on Sunday, three of which raced in grand finals. Besides the novice eight, the second novice eight finished second and the second varsity eight was fourth. The varsity eight raced in the petite final, placing fifth.

UC Davis' novice eight boat posted a 15-second victory in Saturday's preliminary heats and followed that on Sunday, winning by seven seconds. The Aggies finished in 7 minutes, 5.1 seconds with UC San Diego taking second in 7:12.4. UC Santa Barbara placed third and Humboldt State was fourth.

UC San Diego won the second novice eight grand final, beating UC Davis which was second in 7:17.5. Humboldt State finished nearly 25 seconds behind the Aggies. UC Davis' second varsity tried to catch San Diego State for third place in its grand final, but the Aztecs - who were timed in 7:12.9 - edged UC Davis (7:13.3) by just four-tenths of a second. Gonzaga captured top honors in 7:05.3.

The Aggies' varsity eight placed fourth during its preliminary heat on Saturday, placing them in Sunday's petite final. UC Davis sliced just over a second off its time from Saturday, finishing fifth in 7:07.0. Western Washington won in 6:58.2, with the next four boats crossing the line over the next nine seconds. The third through fifth-place crews were spaced by just one second. UC Davis returns to action on May 17 at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, also at Lake Natoma.
