PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - UC Davis rowers won their opening heat by six seconds on Friday at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuykill River, advancing to Saturday's semifinals of the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight competition.

UC Davis finished the sixth heat of the event with a time of 7 minutes, 9.8 seconds, easily beating second-place Drexel which crossed the finish line of the 2,000-meter course in 7:15.8. LaSalle was third in 7:20.3, Penn State placed fourth in 7:49.1 and Albany was fifth in 8:25.1.

The Aggies advance to Saturday morning's semifinals where they will race in lane 3 of the first heat, needing to finish in the top two to earn a spot in the afternoon's grand final and a chance to earn the Evelyn Bergman Trophy. The third- and fourth-place finishers of Saturday's semifinal will race in the petite final, also on Saturday.

UC Davis will race against Creighton, Loyola, Villanova, Georgia and North Carolina in its heat. Only Villanova had a faster time than the Aggies on Saturday and that was by eight-tenths of a second. The Wildcats won their heat with a time of 7:09.0, 10 seconds ahead of runner-up George Mason. UC Davis faced Creighton on April 25 at Lake Natoma in a dual, winning by 11 seconds.

The Aggies are using the same crew it had at last weekend's Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships. Rowing for UC Davis in the varsity eight are coxswain Katie Borg, Kari Harris, Cassie Drotman, Becky Anderson, Marisa O'Brien, Kelli Kramer, Kalie Benson, Elisabeth Patterson and Analiese Zoller.

The Dad Vail is the largest collegiate regatta in the country with more than 100 institutions from Canada and the United States participating. There are 33 crews in the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight.
