PHILADELPHIA, Pa, - UC Davis finished second in its semifinal heat of the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight competition on Saturday morning at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuykill River, earning a spot in the afternoon's grand final and an opportunity to win the Evelyn Bergman Trophy.

UC Davis, which won its opening round heat on Friday, finished second on Saturday in a time of 6 minutes, 49.7 seconds. Villanova, another heat winner from Friday, edged the Aggies by three seconds, clocking 6:46.3. The top two finishers in each of the three semifinal heats advanced to the grand final.

UC Davis will race in lane 5 on Saturday afternoon, the one next to rival Sacramento State, which will be in lane 4. The Hornets won their heat on Saturday morning in 6:33.2. Temple will be in lane 1, St. Joseph's will be in lane 2, Villanova will be in lane 3 and Fordham will race in lane 6.

The grand final matchup marks the fifth showdown between the Hornets and the Aggies, who have each finished in front twice.

The Aggies are using the same crew it had at last weekend's Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships. Rowing for UC Davis in the varsity eight are coxswain Katie Borg, Kari Harris, Cassie Drotman, Becky Anderson, Marisa O'Brien, Kelli Kramer, Kalie Benson, Elisabeth Patterson and Analiese Zoller.

The Dad Vail is the largest collegiate regatta in the country with more than 100 institutions from Canada and the United States participating. There are 33 crews in the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight.
