PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - UC Davis finished third in 7 minutes, 2.2 seconds during Saturday's grand final of the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight competition at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuykill River as Sacramento State took first-place honors and the Evelyn Bergman Trophy.

A close finish between Villanova, UC Davis and St. Joseph's separated second through fourth places by just 49-hundredths of a second.

The Aggies advanced to the grand final after finishing second in their semifinal heat on Saturday morning. UC Davis opened its weekend with a first-place finish during Friday morning's preliminary heat. Thirty-three teams were entered in the Aggies' division.

Sacramento State won Saturday's grand final with a time of 6:54.46 over the 2,000-meter course with Villanova taking second in 7:01.94. UC Davis edged St. Joseph's - which was timed in 7:02.43 - for third, Fordham was fifth in 7:10.25 and Temple placed sixth with a time of 7:12.65. The Aggies' time in the grand final was their second fastest of the two-day regatta.

The matchup between Sacramento State and UC Davis was the fifth of the season between the two local programs. The Hornets have finished in front of the Aggies three times.

UC Davis finished second in Saturday's semifinal in a time of 6:49.7 as Villanova, another heat winner from Friday, edged the Aggies by three seconds, clocking 6:46.3. The top two finishers in each of the three semifinal heats advanced to the grand final.

Rowing for UC Davis in the varsity eight are coxswain Katie Borg, Kari Harris, Cassie Drotman, Becky Anderson, Marisa O'Brien, Kelli Kramer, Kalie Benson, Elisabeth Patterson and Analiese Zoller.

The Dad Vail is the largest collegiate regatta in the country with more than 100 institutions from Canada and the United States participating.
