PHILDADELPHIA, Pa. -- UC Davis's women's varsity eight posted a season-best time of 6 minutes, 28.75 seconds on Friday morning, winning by nearly 13 seconds, and advancing to Saturday's semifinal round at the Dad Vail Regatta being hosted at Schuylkill River.
The 70th annual Dad Vail is the largest collegiate regatta in the country with more than 115 schools competing in various divisions. Forty crews are entered in the prestigious event's varsity eight division which concludes with the grand final at 1:25 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday.
UC Davis has won seven of nine races during the spring and continued its winning ways on Friday when it rolled to a convincing victory over Drexel which was timed in 6:41.82. The Aggies' time over the 2,000-meter course was its best of the year, faster than the 6:33.56 it rowed at the San Diego Crew Classic last month. Santa Clara (6:42.96) took third in UC Davis' heat on Friday and was followed by Lehigh, Drake and Army.
The Aggies' clocking was also the fourth-fastest of the seven preliminary heats. They will row at 8:01 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday in the semifinal round and be matched with Connecticut, Dayton, St. Joseph's, San Diego State and Tulsa. UC Davis will be in lane three. It has already faced San Diego State this season, doing so in the Cal Cup grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Aztecs took fifth in that race which was won for the second straight year by the Aggies.
The top two finishers from each of the semifinal races will advance to the Dad Vail Regatta grand final and race for the Evelyn Bergman Trophy.
