PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- UC Davis completed a perfect weekend at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday when it edged rival Sacramento State and Purdue with a time of 6 minutes, 34.01 seconds, claiming the Evelyn Bergman Trophy and the women's varsity eight grand final.

The grand final victory came after UC Davis posted a blistering time of 6:15.87 during fast conditions in its semifinal round win earlier in the day. The time is believed to be the fastest ever for the Aggies' varsity eight.

The 70th annual Dad Vail Regatta featured 40 boats in the women's varsity eight and more than 115 schools overall and was contested at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The grand final featured a pair of familiar crews in rival Sacramento State and the University of San Diego. The three teams also squared off in the grand final of the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic last month, a race UC Davis won over the Toreros by barely more than a second.

Saturday's grand final in Philadelphia was also a close race with Sacramento State and Purdue challenging for top honors. The Aggies crossed the finish line of the 2,000-meter course first with the Hornets (6:35.77) and Purdue (6:36.90) following just behind. Buffalo was six seconds back of the first three boats with San Diego earning fifth and St. Joseph's (Pa.) taking sixth.

"We wanted to focus on our race plan and not everybody else," said head coach Carissa Adams. "We felt we if we could execute our race place then we could win."

The winning varsity eight boat was comprised of coxswain Tara Davis, Sunny Caldwell at stroke, Alicia Foley at seven, May Roberts at six, Vanessa Cuellar at five, Heidi Okowitz at four, Lucci Lautze at three, Erin Andrews at two and Laura Kelleher at bow.

UC Davis opened Saturday with a nearly three-second win over St. Joseph's in the semifinal round. The Aggies' time of 6:15.87 is significantly faster than its previous season-best, a 6:28.75 during Friday's prelims. Despite its fast time, UC Davis was pushed by St. Joseph's (6:18.40) and San Diego State (6:18.93) with just the top two crews moving onto the grand final.

The Aggies began the regatta with a first-place during its preliminary race on Friday before sweeping their pair of races on Saturday.UC Davis has now won nine of 11 races during its spring season, claiming its second championship. The Aggies also won top honors in the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic in April.

The Aggies were making their first appearance at the Dad Vail Regatta since finishing third in the 2004 grand final.
