Novice Rowers Finish Season Strong At Pac-10's

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis novice eight rowers rebounded from a sixth-place finish in their preliminary heat on Sunday morning to post an impressive second-place showing in the petite final at the Pac-10 Championships at Lake Natoma.

The Aggies cut 13 seconds off their preliminary heat race time to finish second in the petite final in 7 minutes, 15.06 seconds over the 2,000-meter course. Washington State finished first in 6:53.80 while the Aggies held off USC, Sonoma State and UCLA to take second.

UC Davis was in second place after each piece of the petite final but USC was close behind the entire way. The Aggies, however, held off USC down the stretch to earn the runner-up finish. USC was timed n 7:16.76 while Sonoma State was third in 7:18.80 and UCLA fourth in 7:23.57.

The race was nice turnaround for the Aggies, who finished a disappointing sixth in their morning heat, crossing the line in 7:28.80. Gonzaga won the heat in 6:41.30.

Rowing for UC Davis on Sunday were coxswain Tara Davis, Angela Hatch at stroke, Katie Foley at seven, Sarah Schulze at six, Libby Painter at five, Kelly Walton at four, Amelia Lancaster at three, Lucci Lautze at two and Megan Mills at bow.

 

 

Novice coach Carissa Adams was proud of her team's efforts to come back strong in their final race of the season.

"They were able to hold their position in second place down the entire race course and fight of USC during the final 200 meters," she said. "To put it simply, I am very proud of their effort today and am happy that they were able to end the season with such a great comeback.
