UC Davis To Kick Up D.I.R.T. To Open 2006 Spring Season

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's rowing team opens up its spring season in traditional fashion on Sunday morning when the Aggies host the annual Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament at the Port of Sacramento.

Races will be conducted on conjunction with the UC Davis men's club team and begin at 8 a.m. with the women's varsity eight. Second varsity eight (8:30), novice eight (9:15 a.m.), second novice eight (9:45), novice four (11:00), and varsity four races (11:30 and 11:45) will follow throughout the morning hours. Showers are expected in the Sacramento area on Sunday morning.

Other teams scheduled to compete include UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Sonoma State and California Maritime Academy.

Members of the varsity eight and second varsity boats for UC Davis that will race early in the day will also comprise the varsity four boats that will compete toward the end of the schedule.

Racing in the varsity eight boat for the Aggies will be coxswain Katherine Cobarrubia, Cassie Drotman at stroke, Rebecca Maier at seven, May Roberts at six, Vanessa Cuellar at five, Adina Farkash at four, Laura Kelleher at three, Amber Buntin at two and Ashley Lawrence at bow.

Cobarrubia, Drotman, Maier and Buntin all return to the varsity eight lineup after finishing the 2005 season in the boat for the Aggies. Injuries have resulted in some juggled first varsity and second varsity lineups for the Aggies, who hosted their annual Alumni Day on Saturday.

The second varsity eight boat for UC Davis will be comprised of coxswain Niaree Hopelian, Angela Bruno at stroke, Erica Southard at seven, Sarah Kay at six, Sunny Caldwell at five, Heidi Okowitz at four, Reva Birnbaum at three, Kalie Benson at two and Erin Andrews at bow.

Christine Bruni and Joei Yau will cox the varsity four boats.

Sunday's racing is the first of two consecutive home datss for UC Daviw, which will San Diego State on Mar. 11.
