DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's rowing team opens its first official NCAA Division I season on Sunday morning when the Aggies host the annual Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament (DIRT) at the Port of Sacramento in the first races of the spring campaign.

UC Davis, which will host the event in conjunction with the men's club program, will be joined by Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara and Sonoma State. The regatta begins at 8 a.m. with eight women's races scheduled, ending with the novice four at 11:45. UC Davis will have crews entered in each race.

The varsity eight will open competition for the Aggies with its race against Santa Clara and UCSB at 8:15 with UC Davis rowing from lane 2. The second varsity eight is at 8:45 and the novice eight is at 9:15.

Four rowers who were part of last year's second-place crew at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (WIRA) return to the varsity eight for this weekend's race. Sunny Caldwell will again be at stroke and is joined by returners Alicia Foley, Vanessa Cuellar and Laura Kelleher.

Four Aggies who helped lead the second varsity eight to a gold medal at last season's WIRA Championships will also be in the varsity eight for the opener including coxswain Tara Davis, Heidi Okowitz, Alicia Wong and Lucci Lautze. The boat will be completed by Erin Andrews.

Sunday's competition will allow all available rowers in the UC Davis program to get early-season experience.

"This is our season-opener and we are very excited to get it under our belts," said head coach Carissa Adams. "We are still working with lineups and have a few people from both the varsity and novice squads out with injuries and illnesses.

"This race will be utilized to assess our strengths and weaknesses and then we can decide how we want to proceed with the rest of the season," she added. "We are using this race as a training tool. Every rower on the squad will be able to participate in this weekend's races and I expect great things from each and everyone of them."

Sunday's race is the first of three home events for UC Davis which will also host San Diego State on Mar. 30 and rival Sacramento State on Apr. 26. The Causeway Dual with the Hornets will feature the Jean Runyon Cup between the program's varsity eight squads.
