DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's rowing team returns to competition for the first time since March 11 when the Aggies travel to Southern California for the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Mission Bay.
The regatta, which began in 1973 and attracts men's and women's crews from across the country, will host preliminary races on Saturday morning before hosting grand and petite finals on Sunday morning.
The Aggies' varsity eight will compete for the Cal Cup against 17 other teams, including several out-of-region crews. UC Davis will compete in the second of three preliminary heats, facing off against Navy, Bucknell, Lehigh, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and Sonoma State.
The top two finishers from each Cal Cup heat will advance to the grand final, the next two from each prelim race will move on to the petite final and the remaining boats will comprise the third final.
UC Davis finished sixth in the grand final of the Cal Cup last year after winning the petite final in 2004. Varsity coach Emily Plesser said the rainy weather recently and a shorter-than-usual spring break have made it difficult for the team to get fully prepared for the tough competition.
"The weather was really bad," she said. "The week was too short. We could have used much more water time to fine tune (but) we will go down and see what we can do."
The Aggies' varsity eight boat will be made up of coxswain Katherine Cobarrubia, Cassie Drotman at stroke, Becky Anderson at seven, Vanessa Cuellar at six, May Roberts at five, Rebecca Maier at four, Adina Farkash at three, Laura Kelleher at two and Amber Buntin at bow.
UC Davis has raced in the novice eight petite final the past three seasons and this year will race in the third of four preliminary heats on Saturday morning. The Aggies, who have posted a pair of come-from-behind wins in their last two races, will be in lane four between Sonoma State's B team and San Diego State. Oregon State, USC and UC Santa Barbara round out the heat.
UC Davis's novice eight lineup will consist of coxswain Tara Davis, Katie Foley at stroke, Libby Painter at seventh, Sarah Schulze at six, Angela Hatch at five, Anna Lung at four, Megan Mills at three, Melissa Fletcher at two and Amelia Lancaster at bow.
Each of the four heat winners in the novice competition will advance to the grand finals with other participants advancing on time.
The grand final of the Cal Cup will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the petite final at 9:20. The third final will be contested on Saturday afternoon. The petite final of the novice competition is scheduled for 8:20 on Sunday morning with the grand final at 9:50. The third and fourth finals will be raced on Saturday afternoon.
