WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Rivalry takes center for the UC Davis women's rowing team this weekend when the Aggies host Sacramento State in a Causeway Classic dual which featuring the annual Jean Runyon Cup showdown between the varsity eight programs.
The local rivals will open with the novice eight race at 8:15 a.m. and second varsity eight at 8:30, followed by the varsity eight (8:45), varsity four (9 a.m.) and second novice eight races (9:15).
All races will be hosted on the Aggies' home course at the Port of Sacramento.
The Hornets hold a 10-3 series advantage in the Jean Runyon Cup but UC Davis has won two of the past three matchups including their most recent race at the Port of Sacramento in 2008.
The Aggies led last year's varsity eight race after the first 500 meters before Sacramento State took the lead. UC Davis closed down the stretch but was edged at the line by a little more than a second-and-a-half. The Aggies' time of 6 minutes, 48.2 was its best to that point in the season.
This year, they enter the meet after racing in the invitational division of the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic on Mar. 27-28. UC Davis, which narrowly missed a berth in the grand finals, won the petite final in 6:56.2, its fastest time this spring.
"The team is looking forward to the dual," said head coach Carissa Adams. "The varsity eight felt very confident after the San Diego Crew Classic and we are demonstrating more consistency this year. "
Sacramento State's varsity eight enters the dual after placing third in the Cal Cup division at San Diego.
