GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's rowing team will face tough competition on Sunday when the Aggies compete at Lake Natoma in the Pac-10 Conference Championships with some of the strong crews in the country.

The Aggies' varsity eight, coming off a win at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta last week when it finished first among 40 crews, is seeded 10th at the Pac-10 Championships. UC Davis will race in lane 5 in the second of two heats, needing to place in the top three in order to qualify for the grand final. Race tim is 8:50 a.m.

"Our goal is to close the gap between our squad and the Pac-10," said head coach Carissa Adams. "The varsity eight has eight seniors, including the coxswain, and they have all had a great runvthis season. They are all very anxious to see how they can match up with some of the strongest programs in the country."

UC Davis will also race in the second varsity eight and novice eight divisions. Both boats will be trying to finish standout seasons when they race on Sunday. The second varsity eight is seeded ninth and will race at 8:20 a.m. in lane 5. The novice eight is seeded sixth and will race from lane 3 at 9:10.

Cal holds down the top seed in both the varsity and novice eight competitions while Washington is seeded No. 1 in the second varsity eight.

Grand finals and petite finals will be held in the afternoon.

Rowing in the varsity eight will be Tara Davis at coxswain, Sunny Caldwell at stroke, Alicia Foley at seven, May Roberts at six, Vanessa Cuellar at five, Brittani De Riemer at four, Lucci Lautze at three, Heidi Okowitz at two and Laura Kelleher at bow.

The second varsity eight will be comprised of Sossi Hanoian at coxswain, Erin Andrews at stroke, Darcy Ward at seven, Melissa Wong at six, Brooke Thomas at five, Autumn Huey at four, Lauren Auble at three, Megan Feeney at two and Ashley Lugo at one.

The novice boat will have Natasha Loghmanpur at coxswain, Christine Neuman at stroke, Rebecca Davidson at seven, Allison Bruton at six, Hannah Owens at five, Elieke Demmer at four, Katherine Francis at three, Elena Manning at two and Melissa McCue at bow.
