DAVIS, Calif. - Sunny Caldwell, who rowed stroke for the UC Davis varsity eight this past season, earned prestigious selection to the Women's National Team Summer Selection Camp in Virginia and is currently competing for a spot on the United States team that will compete at the 2007 FISA Under 23 World Championships in July in Scotland.

The selection camp, hosted by the University of Virginia, continues until June 19 at Rivanna Reservoir. It consists of 20 of the top collegiate rowers, most of whom competed at the NCAA Division I Championships in May and are members of traditional rowing powers. Ten rowers and a cosxwain will earn selection to the team.

"It is really amazing that Sunny was selected to this camp," said UC Davis interim head coach Carissa Adams. "She is going to be rowing with some of the top collegiate rowers in the country. Sunny's selection was based purely on her statistics; she has a great ergometer score for her height and weight."

Many of the rowers from the camp will be under consideration for next year's Olympic team, a testament to the quality of athletes currently competing for a spot on this year's team. University of California head coach Dave O'Neill is conducting the camp for U.S. Rowing.

"Sunny's selection to the camp will aid in putting UC Davis on the map for Division I rowing," said Adams. "It brings recognition to our program. Although it will take more time to compete with the top Div. I programs in the country, this shows that we are moving in the right direction."

Caldwell, a junior from Rancho Cordova, was a key member of the Aggie team this past season which won eight races this spring including the Cal Cup Championship at the San Diego Crew Classic and the Jean Runyon Cup over rival Sacramento State. She was also an All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association first-team selection.

Caldwell was also a finalist for UC Davis' Dr. Hubert Heitman Award as the female athlete of the year.
