DAVIS, Calif. - -
Ashley Edwards' goal in the 19th minute and Allison Kelly's header in the 60th staked UC Davis to a two-goal lead as the Aggies went on to beat visiting Fresno State 2-1 in a season-opening nonconference women's soccer game on Friday afternoon.
Fresno State, also playing its first game of the 2012 season, picked up a goal from Callie Hancock in the 78th minute but the Bulldogs weren't able to get the equalizer the remainder of the way.
"We played some really good soccer," said Aggie head coach Maryclaire Robinson. "Fresno State took it to us in the second half. But I've got to say we've got a young group and they had a great showing, a great showing."
The Aggies possessed the ball for much of the first 25 minutes of the game, taking the first five shots before Ashley Edwards rebounded a ball off Kiele Argente's foot in front of the goal to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way into the second half before UC Davis struck 15 minutes in. That's when Lauren Paul's corner kick from the left side lofted into the box where senior Allison Kelly headed it in for her first goal of the year.
UC Davis stayed in control of the game from there but the Bulldogs battled back to pull within a goal in the 78th minute when Rachel Armstrong's pass ahead got by a defender, setting up Callie Hancock who was able to push it by Aggie goalkeeper Taylor Jern.
The Bulldogs tried to get the tying goal but UC Davis' defense didn't allow a shot for the final 12 minutes, preserving the opening game win.
UC Davis outshot Fresno State 14-10. Jern had two saves for the Aggies while Katie DeVault had three for the Bulldogs.
UC Davis will return to action next Friday, traveling to face rival Sacramento State at 5 p.m.
