SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- UC Davis junior goalkeeper Alexis Smith finished with six saves and freshman Monet Kunz tallied a pair of shots to help pace the Aggies, but host San Diego State scored the lone goal of the match early in the second half, lifting the Aztecs to a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, Calif.
UC Davis fell to 0-2 overall on the season, falling by a single goal in each of their first two contests against the No. 3-ranked team in the nation and the preseason Mountain West Conference champs. San Diego State improved to 1-1 on the year.
"The fans were treated to a very good performance by an improving UC Davis team," Head Coach Twila Kaufman said. "I believe in who we are and what we have. We were good enough to win today, but games at this level come down to details. We will work on getting the details right."
UC Davis applied pressure early, gaining three corners in the first five minutes and Kunz testing SDSU keeper Gabby English with a shot on frame in the fifth minute that was turned away, adding another in the 29th minute that was also saved.
At the other end, Smith made both of her first half saves on back-to-back attempts by Mia Root and Rachel Speros just six seconds apart in the 14th minute, and her defense blocked two more to keep the match scoreless after the first 45 minutes.
That set the stage for the only score of the match as the Aztecs came through with the game winner in the 52nd minute. After two early corners by the Aggies, Aliyah Utush scored her second of the year from five yards out off passes from Root and Speros for the 1-0 lead.
Smith was also busy after the break, stopping four shots in the second half -- including denying Utush on a penalty kick attempt in the 78th minute -- to keep her side close. UC Davis had a chance to equalize late, earning a pair of corners in the final five minutes, with a shot by Emma Hasco blocked away by the defense.
The Aggies return to the Aggie Soccer Field for their home opener on Friday (Aug. 25), welcoming two-time NCAA national champion Portland to Davis, Calif., for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
