MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Sophomore Shannon Mally's first-half goal was the only scoring for UC Davis as the Aggies played to a 1-1, double-overtime tie against No.23 Barry University in first-round play at the Nike Invitational Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

With the tie UC Davis moves to 0-1-1 on the season while Barry goes to 0-2-1.

The Buccaneers jumped out in front early when freshman Ulla Matikainen placed a perfect pass on the foot of forward Tammie Thornton who found the back of the net from eighteen yards out at the 13:26 mark. The Aggies responded shortly after, closing out the first half with Mally's goal with 9:53 to play. The play began when Roxanne Croze sent the ball wide to Jacque Kocer, who took two touches then slotted it to the middle where Mally beat Buccaneer keeper Johanna Fischer with the equalizer.

In the second half, UC Davis had its chances but could not convert. Neither team was able to break down the opponent's defense the rest of the way, forcing sudden death overtime. In overtime, UC Davis outshot Barry 4-2, but again it was the defense that prevailed as nobody was able to score in two 10:00 minute periods.

"Barry is a real good team," said Aggie Head Coach MaryClaire Robinson. "They scored first, then we kind of put it together after that. We had chances but just couldn't finish. It was a good game and exciting to watch. We are still working out a few kinks put we'll get it together."

For the second straight day, the weather played havoc with the contest. Originally scheduled for Thursday, today's game was postponed to today due to lightning. There was another lightning delay on Friday, for about 10 minutes in between the second period and the first overtime.

For the game the Aggies outshot the Buccaneer's, 18-10, while holding a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. UC Davis goalkeeper Krystyn Lizak recorded five saves while her counterpart Fischer notched nine, including two in overtime.

UC Davis will conclude its two-game swing through southern Florida on Saturday with a meeting against Eckerd College. Gametime is set for 4:00 p.m. PDT.
