Drake Scores Two Early Goals En Route To Win Over Aggies

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Ashley Pyle and Ashley Schmitz each scored in the opening 10 minutes then the Bulldog defense did the rest as Drake University defeated UC Davis 2-0 in the second and final round of the 49er Classic women's soccer tournament Sunday morning.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 1-2 on the season while Drake gets its first win of the season against three losses.

Drake had all the momentum early, as Pyle headed a cross from Schmitz to make it 1-0 at 7:46. Schmitz then scored herself, at 9:28, taking a midfield pass from Karisa Vandello to set up the team's second goal of the day.

Both teams managed 14 shots on the day. Davis had its chances to cut the lead in half late in the contest, as Katie Snyder's try in the 74th minute and Kristin Aja's shot in 83rd minute were each stopped by Drake goalie Kate Stack.

At the conclusion of play on Sunday the 49er Classic all-tournament team was announced and included Aja and Aggie forward Lindsey Raymond.

UC Davis is next in action on Friday when it travels south to face UC Riverside in Riverside. Gametime is set for 3 pm.
