DAVIS, Calif. -
Shannon Mally scored her third goal of the season and assisted on the game-winner in the opening half as UC Davis defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 3-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game Friday afternoon at Aggie Field.
With the win the Aggies improve to 2-3-1 on the season, 2-2 in CCAA play. Stanislaus falls to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in conference action.
UC Davis opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Mally's pass through the crease looked to be going wide before Leifa Mayers came streaking in from the left side to punch in the goal inside the six-yard box. Less than two minutes later and the Aggies still pressuring the Warrior defense, Jacque Kocer gathered a loose ball about 35 yards out. She sent a long serve towards the box that found its way over the head of Warrior goalkeeper Ashley Hills to close out the first half scoring.
The score would remain at 2-0 until the 84th minute when on a counterattack, Mally gathered the ball in the Aggie half and dribbled the length of the field before beating Hills to the near post for the final score.
For the game UC Davis dominated play, outshooting the Warriors 23-7, forcing Stanislaus' goalkeepers to make eight saves. In the Aggie net, Krystyn Lizak needed to make only one save to record the first shutout of her collegiate career.
"We did some nice things today," said Aggie head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "Stanislaus is a quality team. They have a new coach and she has them organized and playing hard.
"Our midfield played much better today," Robinson continued. "We had great chances in the first half and put two in and that changed the game."
UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield at Aggie Field. Gametime is set for 12:30pm.
