ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UC Davis came inches away on two occasions from neutralizing a lead created by first-half goals scored by No. 19 Texas Tech, in the first of two games scheduled this weekend at the Jack in the Box Classic, but was unable chip away at its deficit as the afternoon progressed and dropped its Friday afternoon contest at Roberson Field by a final score of 3-0.
UC Davis will enter Sunday's non-conference road match against New Mexico with a 2-5-1 overall record. Possessing its highest ranking in school history, No. 19 Texas Tech improves to 8-1-0 with the result.
The Red Raiders struck twice in the early moments of the first half, in the 11th and 16th minute, to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.
nearly cut that lead in half with 15 minutes remaining until halftime. Shortly after she gained possession, she fired an attempt towards Texas Tech's net, only to be turned away by the left post. By a matter of inches, a potential UC Davis goal became an attempt to score that eventually ricocheted out-of-bounds.
Were it not for the last-ditch effort of Texas Tech goalkeeper Victoria Esson midway through the second half, Lexi Poppoff
would have netted her second goal of the season.
On an Aggie breakaway scoring opportunity, Poppoff blasted a shot that was barely deflected by Texas Tech's 'keeper. By guessing correctly on Poppoff's shot, Esson was able to create a touch just strong enough to deflect the ball off its intended path. A shot that looked like a surefire goal soon deflected off the upper-half of the crossbar to safety, creating another Aggie corner kick in the process.
Of the nine shots recorded by the Aggies, Hannah Hicks
took a team-high three.
After Jern made a diving stop in the latter moments of the first half, Bell stepped away from her position near the far post, as the play continued, to clear the ball outside the 18-yard area.
