RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Stephanie Rowe scored in the eighth minute and then again in the 55th minute against UC Davis on Sunday as New Mexico blanked the Aggie women's soccer team 2-0 in the second round of the UC Riverside Tournament.
The Aggies, who shut out Lamar 4-1 on Friday, dropped to 5-4-1 while New Mexico improved to 6-4-1. Liz Nare and Elba Hoguin had assists on Rowe's first goal while Rowe's second score was unassisted.
UC Davis goalkeeper Taylor Jern made the first of her six saves on Sunday in the fifth minute but New Mexico would strike for the first goal just over four minutes later when Nare sent a ball deep right to Holguin who crossed it into the box where Rowe collected it and scored from six yards.
New Mexico outshot the Aggies 9-3 in the first half, including putting six shots on goal where Jern stopped five.
UC Davis wasn't able to get a shot in the first nine minutes of the second half before Rowe score again, this time from a yard out when a pass back to Jern got over the top of her and Rowe slid in and redirected it into the net.
The Aggies had four shots on goal the remainder of the game but New Mexico's Kelli Cornell stopped each one. Cornell finished with five saves.
The match was the the final one of the nonconference season for UC Davis which will open Big West Conference action on Friday at UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies will visit Cal Poly on Sunday as they play the sixth of seven games away from their home field.
