DAVIS, Calif. - Visiting Saint Mary's overcame a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 double overtime non-conference women's soccer victory over UC Davis Friday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Rochelle VanBuskirk scored the lone Aggie goal while SMC's Jessica Menzhuber scored twice to lead the Gaels.
UC Davis (5-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when VanBuskirk knocked in a five-yard blast front in front of the goal. It was the Aggie's team-leading 10th goal of the season. Alexis Knudtson picked up the assist on a feed from the left endline to an open VanBuskirk in the middle. The first half featured a near-even amount of opportunities as the Aggies had six shots compared to five for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's (8-5-0) would outshoot UC Davis, 9-2, in the second half, but the Aggies took the 1-0 lead well into the period before the Gaels broke through. In the 78th minute, Menzhuber scored her seventh goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1. It would stay that way through the end of regulation.
UC Davis looked prime to win the game less than a minute into the first overtime when Marisa Boge and VanBuskirk had a two-on-one. The ultimate shot was smothered by a game-saving stop by SMC keeper Tara Larson. After a scoreless first overtime, Menzhuber scored the game-winner in the third minute of the second extra period.
Saint Mary's finished with a 17-10 edge in shots. Each keeper, including Sarah Peters for UC Davis, finished with two saves. Boge also had a defensive save in the game.
UC Davis is next in action Sunday when it opens Big West Conference play at Long Beach State.
