NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The UC Davis women's soccer team dropped their opening Big West contest, falling 2-1 vs. Cal State Northridge Friday at Matador Soccer Field in Northridge, Calif.
Bridget Berman scored the lone goal for UC Davis, evening the score at 1-1 in the second half, before Melissa Fernandez scored the eventual game winner for the Matadors. With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 5-4-1 on the season with a 0-1 mark in conference play, while the Matadors improved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the Big West.
CSUN managed to light up the scoreboard early in the first half, thanks to a goal by Farryn Townley in the eighth minute. After picking up a loose ball at the top of the box, Townley sent in a goal in the lower left corner, to put the Matadors up 1-0.
Despite out shooting CSUN 8-7 in the opening 45 minutes, UC Davis couldn't find the back of the net, keeping it a 1-0 Matador advantage at the half.
The Aggies struck back in the second half, using Berman's goal for the equalizer in the 48th minute. Using the Lisa Kemp cross, Berman sent in a goal off the post to make it a 1-1 score.
Fernandez managed to answer later in the half with a goal for CSUN, giving the Matadors a 2-1 lead at the 64th minute. After taking the cross from Amanda Smith, Fernandez scored from close range.
Kathleen Brandl and Maria Magana split time in goal for UC Davis, each recording a pair of saves. For CSUN, Cynthia Jacobo earned a complete game win after five saves.
UC Davis will stay on the road this weekend, traveling to play Big West foe UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
