LONG BEACH, Calif. - Rochelle VanBuskirk scored her 11th goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as Long Beach State defeated UC Davis, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the Big West Conference opener for the Aggies. Shawna Gordon scored both goals for the 49ers.
Gordon scored her first goal late in the 12th minute of the first half to give Long Beach State a 1-0 lead. The 49ers made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when Gordon connected again. In the 41st minute, the Aggies cut the deficit in half when VanBuskirk continued her strong season with a goal to make it 2-1. Elise Winbrock assisted on the score as the Aggies went to the half trailing by the same margin.
The second half would turn out to be scoreless as the 49ers would hold on for the one-goal victory. LBSU outshot UC Davis, 20-12. That included a 12-5 edge in the first half. VanBuskirk led the Aggies with three shots while Marisa Boge and Jordan Martin each has two. Sarah Peters posted a season-high seven saves in goal for the Aggies.
UC Davis is next in action Friday when it hosts UC Irvine at 3 p.m.
