LONG BEACH, Calif. - Goals scored by UC Davis midfielder Ashley Edwards and Long Beach State, less than 30 seconds from one another in Thursday night's Big West match from George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif., helped each team record its first conference draw by ending 110 minutes of action deadlocked at 1-1.

UC Davis will face UC Irvine Sunday afternoon with a 3-5-3 overall record and 0-0-1 league mark, Long Beach State ends its weekend with respective records of 7-5-1 and 1-1-1.

"I'm pleased to begin conference play with a tie against a great opponent," said head coach Maryclaire Robinson. "Big West points are hard to earn, it was a great battle tonight."

Prior to Thursday's result, a clear-cut winner left the field in the nine previous head-to-head meetings between UC Davis and Long Beach State; this is the first time both teams pushed one another to the 110-minute limit and left with a draw.

Edwards helped UC Davis take the lead on a shot taken from the right side of the box in the 70th minute that sailed past Long Beach State goalkeeper Kaci McCain. Edwards' accuracy was on full display, on that play, as the ball was aimed perfectly just under the crossbar, and inside the left post.

The goal was the senior's third of the season and second in as many games.

The Aggies' advantage was short-lived, however, as the 49ers scored the equalizer 26 seconds later to even the score. That 1-1 tie held throughout the rest of regulation, and two overtime periods to give the Aggies their second draw in the last three games, and Long Beach State its first of the year.

"We had a 1v1 in the first overtime; I thought we might sneak one in but their goalkeeper made the save.

"We had excellent energy and generated a number of quality dangerous opportunities. Lexi Poppoff was a handful for the 49ers tonight and our midfielders really worked hard. Our backline deserves kudos as well for its effort; tonight's match was an absolute battle on a beautiful night," said Robinson.

Sienna Drizin led all Aggies with four shots, one-third of her team's total; McCain saved two of those attempts.

UC Davis goalkeeper Taylor Jern recorded four of her eight saves throughout the first 45 minutes of action.

The Aggies will visit Anteater Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 13, in a 2 p.m. Big West matchup, a link for live stats is available at ucdavisaggies.com.
