DAVIS, Calif. - - UC Davis battled No. 22 Long Beach State in a scoreless game for nearly 80 minutes on Friday afternoon but the 49ers picked up a late goal from Eileen Maes and then held on to beat the Aggies 1-0 in a Big West women's soccer match at Aggie Soccer Field.
UC Davis saw its Big West record evened up at 2-2 while its overall mark went to 7-6-1. Long Beach State, the preseason favorite by the coaches to win the conference championship, improved to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the league.
The Aggies outshot the 49ers 14-13 in the game and matched them with five shots on goal, but Long Beach State got the game's only goal in the 78th minute when Jenny Soza moved in toward the goal and passed inside the box to Maes who put the ball into the back of the net.
UC Davis tried to rally late in the game, getting a shot on goal from Taylor Duffner but it was saved by Marrina Meyers. Hannah Hicks got a shot about a minute later that went high while the Aggies' best chance came from Julia Shockley whose long shot hit the crossbar in the 90th minute.
"Our sport is all about finishing your chances," said Aggie coach Maryclaire Robinson. "We had fantastic chances -- we had the best chances in the game -- and yet it comes down to who finishes. They had one and they finished it. We had a bunch, and we didn't. So we walk away hungry."
Despite the loss, Robinson found positives in a tough matchup with one of the country's best teams.
"In terms of the process, this was a great day," she said. "(Long Beach is) in the Top 25 and yet we played through them in the midfield and we had success getting in behind. I'm very pleased with the effort.
"The result stings but in terms of the level of play and where we are as a
program, it was absolutely awesome," she added. "It makes you sick at how hard these Big West wins are to get. But in terms of the process, it was a great day."
Taylor Jern had four saves, including stopping a point-blank shot by Maes early in the second half by sliding for the stop. Meyers had five saves for Long Beach State. UC Davis outshot the 49ers 10-6 in the second half.
The Aggies will return to action on Sunday, taking on UC Irvine at 1 p.m. The Anteaters were picked second in the preseason Big West poll.
