DAVIS, Calif. - Kiele Argente scored from the right side in the third minute of overtime on Thursday afternoon as the UC Davis women's soccer team beat visiting Pacific 3-2 before 615 fans, the Aggies' first win over the Tigers during their four seasons of Big West Conference competition.
UC Davis won its second straight game, improving to 8-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Big West. Freshman Rogan Dolan and senior Allison Kelly also scored for the Aggies who battled back from an early deficit. Pacific, which received goals from Alex Topp and Kristina Wavomba, fell to 7-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.
Neither team scored in the final 45 minutes of regulation after a flurry of goals led to a 2-2 halftime tie. Argente, however, ended the game early in the first overtime, taking a pass from senior Lisa Kemp and powering a shot from the right side that hit the crossbar and the post on the left before bounding into the goal.
"To get that chance, to have Kiele have her moment of brilliance could not have come at a better time," said Aggie head coach Maryclaire Robinson. "These conference points are like gold. You've got one team at 3-0, one team at 0-4 and it's just a mess in the middle. Each game is absolutely crucial."
The goal delivered UC Davis its first win over Pacific since joining the Big West in 2007. The Tigers had won the first three matchups.
It was Pacific, though, that got the advantage early on, scoring in the 18th minute when Alex Topp raced on a pass on the left side from Laura Hernandez and Pernille Schulze-Larsen and knocked it in for a goal. That lead lasted 10 minutes though because UC Davis scored twice on corner kicks in a span of just over five minutes.
The first goal came on a corner kick by Mary Beth Mazurek into the box that Allison Kelly headed into the back of the net in the 28th minute. In the 33rd minute, the Aggies struck on a corner kick once again, this time from the opposite side when Kirstin Holmberg fed a ball to freshman Rogan Dolan who scored from about 10 yards, giving the Aggies a 2-1 advantage.
Pacific tied the game going into the break when Kristina Wavomba scored her eighth goal of the season after a throw-in from Lauren Olvera in the 41st minue.
The teams tightened the defense in the second half, each getting just one shot on goal. The match moved into extra time - the second overtime game for UC Davis during Big West play - and Argente finished it with her second game-winning goal this season.
UC Davis outshot Pacific 12-11 and had one more shot on goal. Tigers keeper Tashia Long and Aggie goalie Maria Magana each had three saves.
The Aggies moved into a second-place tie with UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge pending Cal Poly's (2-2-0 in Big West) game against UC Riverside on Thursday. UC Davis and Cal Poly will meet in San Luis Obispo on Sunday afternoon in another conference match.
