POMONA, Calif. - Erica Rodriguez scored the game-winner in the 79th minute as No.12 Cal Poly Pomona held off a late UC Davis charge to defeat the No.20 Aggies, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field.
With the loss, UC Davis falls to 8-3-2 on the season, 5-2-2 in CCAA play while Cal Poly Pomona improves to 10-5-0, 8-3-0 in conference action.
The game was a defensive struggle as both teams packed it in. For the contest, UC Davis managed seven shots while Pomona had just four. Following a scoreless first half, the Broncos broke through with just over 10 minutes remaining when Michelle McConnell send a long pass to Rodriguez, who was able to elude UC Davis goalkeeper Christine Ogden and tap the ball into the open net.
UC Davis kept off the pressure over the final 10 minutes, but could not get a ball past Bronco keeper Vanessa Richardson, who made two saves on the afternoon.
UC Davis will next be in action on Friday when it hosts Cal State L.A. at Aggie Field.
