DAVIS, Calif. - With just over four minutes remaining in double overtime during Sunday's Big West Conference match at Aggie Soccer, UC Davis midfielder Ashley Edwards earned her third game-winning goal of the season on a one-time shot from sophomore forward Sienna Drizin to help the Aggies defeat Cal State Northridge, 1-0.
The victory improves UC Davis' overall record to 4-7-3, and league mark to 1-2-1, CSUN is now 5-10-1 and 0-4-1 with the result.
Taylor Jern ended Sunday's match with four saves, but none were as important as the first one she recorded seven minutes into the contest on what was the Matadors' most dangerous scoring opportunity.
On side by the slimmest of margins before she received a long ball from her backline, CSUN midfielder Hannah Wissler created a one-on-one opportunity with Jern just outside the 18-yard box. After taking just one touch, Wissler tried to beat the junior `keeper to her right, a blast that was punched to safety to preserve a scoreless tie
Tied at 0-0 throughout regulation and overtime, it was a run along the far sideline from Drizin that set up the game-winning shot from her teammate.
After dribbling from near midfield, to the end line with a number of Matadors trailing her every step of the way, Drizin cut back towards the net in an effort to create the window of space needed to record her second shot of the afternoon. Instead of firing away at Northridge goalkeeper Cynthia Tafoya, Drizin saw Edwards make a run towards CSUN's goal from the other half of the pitch. Once she punched the ball in Edwards' direction, all she had to do was watch her teammate end the match moments later with a one-time shot that beat Tafoya near post.
In addition to earning her team-high third game-winning goal of 2013, Edwards also helped UC Davis post its first overtime win of the season. In the Aggies' other three overtime contests at Utah, New Mexico and Long Beach State, all finished with a deadlocked score.
UC Davis will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 24, at UC Riverside. Action from UC Riverside Soccer Stadium will start at 7 p.m.
