DAVIS, Calif. -
Kiele Argente scored her fourth goal of the season to help UC Davis get within a goal of Cal State Fullerton in the second half but the Aggies couldn't find the tying goal down the stretch as the Titans posted a 2-1 Big West Conference women's soccer win on Friday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field.
UC Davis, which was looking for its first win since Oct. 5, fell to 7-9-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the Big West while Cal State Fullerton, looking to not only secure a conference tournament berth but possibly win the league's regular-season title, improved to 9-8-0 overall and 6-2-0 in conference matches.
Adriana Gjonovich scored her third goal of the season in the 42nd minute while JeAnne Mazeau added a goal off a direct kick in the 58th to account for Cal State Fullerton's scoring.
"I thought in the first half we did a good job of handling the run of play," said Aggie coach Maryclaire Robinson. "We had one mistake and they snuck one in. I thought in the second half we had much better energy and we went forward and took it at them a little bit. We had much more success, particularly the last 25-30 minutes, in terms of going forward and creating opportunities."
Both teams had early shots on goal that were saved by the Aggies' Taylor Jern and Cal State Fullerton's Lindsey Maricic. The game remained scoreless until the 42nd minute when Gjonovich took a deflected pass from Ann Marie Tangorra along the left endline and found the back of the net from seven yards.
The Titans added their second goal in the 58th minute, taking advantage of a foul on the right side when Mazeau launched an approximately 35-yard shot into the left side of the goal for her fourth score of the season.
UC Davis then halved the lead in the 71st minute when Argente fired in a straightaway shot from 20 yards off a deflection to give the Aggies a chance to tie in the remaining minutes. UC Davis was only able to get one shot the rest of the way, however, as the Titans held on for the win.
Cal State Fullerton held a 9-7 advantage on shots and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks. Jern made four saves for UC Davis while Maricic had one for the Titans.
UC Davis, which has played eight games decided by no more than a goal, will finish its 2012 season on Sunday when the Aggies host UC Riverside at 2 p.m.
