Taylor Nelson and Nicole Sweetman scored goals within a three-minute span of the second half on Friday as Long Beach State snapped visiting UC Davis' five-game winning streak with a 2-0 Big West Conference women's soccer victory.

The match shuffled the upper half of the Big West standings, moving the 49ers into second place with 15 points and UC Davis falling into a tie for third with Cal State Northridge at 13 points.

The match shuffled the upper half of the Big West standings, moving the 49ers into second place with 15 points and UC Davis falling into a tie for third with Cal State Northridge at 13 points. The top four teams will advance to next week's Big West Tournament.

UC Davis is 11-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Big West while the 49ers improved to 12-5-1 and 5-2 in the conference.

Long Beach State outshot the Aggies in the game 18-9 including taking the first five shots of the game as it applied the early offensive pressure. UC Davis wasn't able to get a shot until the 19th minute but finished the first half with five.

A header early in the second half by Annacy Wilson was saved by 49er keeper Kaitlyn Gustaves while Hannah Hicks' try in the 53rd minute was also saved by Gustaves as the 49ers kept UC Davis off the scoreboard.

Long Beach State finally broke the scoreless duel barely more than a minute later when Taylor Nelson headed in her first goal of the season, finding the far post off assists by Nicole Hubbard and Nadia Link.

Just under three minutes later the 49ers found the back of the net again when Nicole Sweetman picked up her fifth goal of the season after Link's long ball into the box led to a one-touch goal.

 

 

The Aggies were only able to manage two shots the rest of the game, one of them saved by Gustaves who had five saves overall. UC Davis keeper Maria Magana had eight saves.

UC Davis was looking for its first six-game winning streak since 2006 and was enjoying its longest streak of the season. It won four in a row earlier this year.

The Aggies' will play Sunday's matchup at Cal State Fullerton beginning at 2 p.m.
