LONG BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis and host Long Beach State battled to a scoreless draw after 45 minutes on Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Aggies couldn't hold off a second-half charge from the host 49ers, who scored twice in the second half to post a 2-0 victory at George Allen Field.
The loss eliminated UC Davis from Big West Conference Tournament contention, ending its season at 4-12-2 overall and 3-3-2 in league play. The Aggies finished in a tie for fifth with Long Beach State, which ended its season at 9-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference.
Katie Pingel in the 68th minute and Rocio Rodriguez in the 87th minute each scored their third goals of the season to propel the 49ers to victory. Long Beach State out-shot UC Davis, 12-5, for the match as the Aggies were led by two shots by Sydney Burger, and one apiece from Monet Kunz, Mckenna Moriarty, and Laura Nichol.
Junior goalkeeper Alexis Smith, who already holds the school record with 19 career shutouts, finished with four saves in net for UC Davis, giving her 84 for the season and 205 for her career, matching Kelly Parker (1997-00) for fourth on the all-time list.
Smith and Imani McDonald each denied a pair of attempts, with the former turning away shots by Allie Emmons and Jessica Vincent in the 24th and 28th minutes, respectively, while Burger and Laura Nichol were stopped in the 18th and 37th minutes to keep the contest scoreless after the first half.
Pingel's individual effort broke up the shutout in the second half, fighting her way past two defenders for the 1-0 lead, but the Aggies answered with a dangerous attempt shortly thereafter as Moriarty's header off a Mandy McKeegan corner kick in the 69th minute went just wide.
Smith made two more stops on back-to-back attempts by pinged and Tori Bolden in the 75th and 77th minutes before the 49ers iced the contest on Rodriguez's goal in the final five minutes.
McKeegan, a senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif., led the Aggies in 2017 with three goals and four assists for 10 points, while freshman Mahlah Catline paced the squad with a team-high four goals. Moriarty added two goals in seven matches, while Olivia Jones added another score.
