FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton scored four first-half goals - two on assists by Ann Marie Tangorra - as the Titans beat visiting UC Davis 4-1 in the final Big West Conference regular-season match for both teams.
Despite the loss, UC Davis has still qualified for the upcoming four-team Big West Conference Tournament and will play a semifinal match at regular-season champion UC Irvine at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The teams played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Sept. 30 in Davis in their only matchup this season.
The Aggies tied for third with Cal State Northridge in the final Big West standings but the Matadors gained the third seed because of its win over UC Davis earlier this month.
The Aggies, 11-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Big West, were picked to finish seventh of eight teams in the league this year but instead made a strong run on their way to a tournament berth. Cal State Fullerton ended its season with a 9-8-3 overall mark and a 3-4-1 Big West record.
Jennifer Smith, Chelsey Patterson, Stacey Fox and Nikki McCants each scored for the Titans while freshman Rogan Dolan notched her second goal of the season for UC Davis.
Cal State Fullerton took early control fo the game, needing just over 11 minutes to get on the scoreboard as Tangorra's shot off the post was rebounded on the right side by Smith and a quick 1-0 lead.
The Titans then surged for back-to-back goals in less than two minutes' span later in the half when Patterson scored to the right post off Lauren Mellano's assist in the 26th minute. That was quickly followed in the 28th minute by Fox who took advantage of Tangorra's second assist to make it 3-0.
UC Davis picked up its lone goal in the 38th minute when Kirstin Holmberg's corner went to the back post where Dolan headed it in. It was Holmberg's second assist of the year.
McCants closed out the game's scoring in the 44th minute when she found the back of the net when Adriana Gjonovich kicked the ball forward to Rebecca Wilson who then touched it to McCants for the goal.
UC Davis had just seven shots in the game, only four of them on goal, and none in the second half. The Titans had 19 shots, seven of them on goal.
The Aggies will enter the postseason with 11 wins - its highest total since 2002 - and winners of five of their last seven games.
Third-seeded Cal State Northridge will travel to face Long Beach State in Thursday's other semifinal game. Winners will play next Sunday at the higher-seeded team's field with the Big West's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
UC Davis is in the league tournament for the first time since joining the Big West in 2007.
