DENVER, Calif. --- Freshman Amy Leichliter's goal from Joslyn Brough
in the 77th minute represented the only scoring in the Metropolitan State
College of Denver's 1-0 win over UC Davis in a frigid NCAA Division II women's
soccer quarterfinal between the Far West and Midwest region champions.
The Aggies end their season at 13-7-2. The Roadrunners improve to 19-2-3,
and advance to the NCAA semifinals in Virginia.
Brough advanced the ball to the left wing, not far from the Aggie endline
when she centered it perfectly to Leichliter. The All-Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference forward found herself relatively isolated just above the penalty
area, placing the ball low into the UC Davis cage at 76:58.
The Aggies controlled the ball for the vast majority of the first half,
taking five shots to Metro's two before the break. In all, the Aggies outshot
the 'Runners 15-7 overall, with eight of those shots stopped by goalkeeper
"I think we played well. We did everything today but finish,"
said Aggie head coach Maryclaire Robinson. "Our backs went forward,
we did a good job of winning balls in the air. We moved off the ball well.
We just didn't finish.
"We had more chances than they did, but you can't win unless you
put goals into the back of the net.. That was the one thing we missed today,
but outside of that I'm really pleased with the way we played."
UC Davis had a number of opportunities to tie the game in the final 10
minutes. In the 81st minute, Carly Broaddus served a free kick into the
center of the penalty area. Ashlee Brutzmann attempted to head the ball,
but it sailed out of her reach. Metro could not clear it out of the box,
but Cynthia Rail was there to corral the pass. Her blast from eight yards
out went dead center on the Metro cage and Allen was there to make the save.
Three minutes later, Christen Rauschnot's cross from the left wing went
in the direction of Meghan Phillips, but Allen again came in to grab the
ball, ending the threat.
UC Davis had a final opportunity on a corner kick in the final minutes,
but Metro midfielder Jenelle Brandt cleared it out of the penalty box for
good. The Aggies never approached the Roadrunner net after that.
An official crowd of 192 was on hand, despite a gametime temperature
of 25 degrees and a wind-chill factor of 18. Metro State athletic department
officials spent the entire morning plowing three to four inches of snow
off the playing surface.
