UC Davis Has 16 Named Big West All-Academic

DAVIS, Calif. - After earning second place in the fall standings in the race for the 2012-13 Big West Commissioner's Cup, UC Davis student-athletes showed prowess in the classroom as well with 16 Aggies honored on the conference's fall All-Academic Team, it's been announced.

To be eligible for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2, complete one full year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is credited, and have competed in at least 50 percent of his/her team's competitions.

The women's cross country team had the highest representation for UC Davis with five individuals honored, all of them repeat honorees: Alycia Cridebring, Shannon Harcus, Sarah Sumpter, Hilary Teaford and Lauren Wallace. Trevor Halsted represented the UC Davis men's cross country team.

The men's soccer team had four oustanding players earn distinction - Academic All-American Mustafa Chopan, Brian Ford, Ian Palmer and Matt Sheldon - tying the Aggies with Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara for the most honorees. Chopan and Palmer earned repeat recognition on the squad.

Bridget Berman, Taylor Duffner and Lexi Poppoff received honors for the UC Davis women's soccer team for the first time, while Megan Lancaster, Katie Quinn and Allison Whitson were honored from the Aggie women's volleyball squad. Whitson is another repeat honoree for UC Davis.

The Aggies' 16 winners is their second-highest total for the fall season since joining the Big West Conference in 2007. UC Davis had an impressive season on the fields of competition as well, averaging 134.0 points in the Commissioner's Cup competition to only trail Cal Poly (144.0).
