MORAGA, Calif. - Off to a 4-1-1 start, the UC Davis women's soccer team will look to build on strong games last weekend when it opens play at the Saint Mary's Tournament on Friday against the host Gaels before facing Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
UC Davis tries to keep its winning ways going with Friday's matchup against Saint Mary's, which enters the four-team tournament with a 3-3-1 record. The Gaels turned back Big West member Cal Poly 1-0 last week before tying visiting Oregon 1-1 on Sunday. Saint Mary's is 2-1-1 over its last four matches, also earning a 1-0 victory over Sam Houston State on Aug. 31.
Both Katy Roby and Christina Tognetti have a pair of goals for the Gaels while Roby's two assists give her a team-best four points. Her goal in the 49th minute on a free kick against the Ducks tied that game. Goalie Khayla Jones had four saves.
Cal State Bakersfield, which will face Bucknell in the tournament opener on Friday, is 2-5-1 after falling to UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on Monday. That followed a convincing 5-1 victory over Idaho State last Friday that, along with a 2-1 victory over the University of San Francisco, formed their two victories so far this season.
Eric Shelton's three goals are tops for the Roadrunners who have also picked up a pair of scores from Joanna Ortiz. Five different players have tallied goals for Cal State Bakersfield while goalie Tori Ornela has made 30 saves.
UC Davis bounced back from a disappointing loss to Cal with a shutout win over Northern Arizona. Ashley Edwards scored her team-leading third goal to get the Aggies on the scoreboard in the 20th minute while Taylor Duffner and Kiele Argente added goals as well.
Jern Taylor benefitted from a strong defense in front of her, saving the only two shots on goal that made their way to her. She has 20 saves this season.
The Aggies are playing on the road for the first time since opening the year with five home games in their first six contests. They'll play at the UC Riverside Tournament next week and then open Big West action on Sept. 28 at UCSB, the first of three straight league games on the road. UC Davis doesn't return home until facing Long Beach State on Oct. 12.
