McKeegan clutch en route to Big West weekly award

DAVIS, Calif. -- Tasked with limiting two of the Big West Conference's top scoring teams, UC Davis senior Mandy McKeegan went above and beyond on both sides of the ball en route to her first career defensive player of the week honor from the league office on Monday afternoon.

McKeegan joins teammate Alexis Smith as Aggie honorees this season after the UC Davis goalkeeper picked up her second career award on Oct. 2.

The neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major from Manhattan Beach, Calif., added some offensive punch with the game-winning goal in the closing minutes of a 1-0 victory over UC Irvine, then posted the game-tying assist on teammate Mahlah Catline's goal that forged a 1-1 draw at Cal State Fullerton to finish the week.

Ranked No. 1 in goals during conference play with 11 entering the week, the Anteaters were limited to just three shots on goal for the match as McKeegan and the back line shutout UC Irvine for only the fourth time all year.

Three days later, she helped the defense lock down the Titans to the tune of five shots on goal, keeping the Aggies close until Catline's header midway through the second half.

McKeegan, who leads the team with 10 points on three goals and four assists, enters the week with a point in each of the team's last four matches and has 11 helpers for her career -- just three shy of matching Kim Haskell (1993-96) and Laura Whitsitt (1994-95) for fifth on the school's all-time list.

The Aggies host their final two home matches of the season this week, welcoming UC Santa Barbara to town on Thursday (Oct. 19) for a 3 p.m. kick off, before CSUN visits on Sunday (Oct. 22) for a 1 p.m. matinee at Aggie Soccer Field.
