DAVIS, Calif. – Senior defender Mary Beth Mazurek was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as one of its All-West Region third team recipients as announced by the organization Wednesday.
Mazurek was the only member of UC Davis women’s soccer named to one of the NSCAA’s three teams; this is the first time in her career that all-region recognition was bestowed to her.
The award is the second received in as many months by the Ventura, Calif., native as the Big West Conference also named the four-year letterwinner to its first team when all-conference selections were announced last November.
One of five Aggies to start in all 18 games played this past season, Mazurek capped a successful collegiate career by helping her team record a shutout victory over UC Santa Barbara in this season’s finale. As the leader of UC Davis’ backline, the Aggies were able to earn four shutout victories throughout the year thanks to Mazurek’s guidance, maturity and soccer savvy.
Selected as one of the team’s three captains this season by her teammates, Mazurek anchored a stingy backline throughout her four seasons as a member of the program. Named a starter by former head coach Maryclaire Robinson in all 91 games played, she entered this season with a goal, and two assists to her credit.
Mazurek was also responsible for the game-winning assist at this year’s Causeway Classic to help extend her team’s win streak against rival Sacramento State. Including this year’s victory, the Aggies have dominated the head-to-head series against the Hornets in recent years and will enter 2014’s matchup with an impressive seven-game win streak.
Mazurek will graduate this spring with a degree in neurobiology, physiology & behavior.
