CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - UC Davis split its two games Sunday at the Cathedral City Kickoff with a 5-0 win over James Madison followed by a 2-1 loss to Illinois. Alex Holmes struck out 11 in a two-hit shutout against the Dukes and also drove in a run. Julie Stauder and Rachel Miller also had RBIs in the win. UC Davis concluded the tournament with a 3-1 record.
Holmes continued her impressive start to the season with a two-hit shutout. The sophomore struck out 11 and walked just one. The hits allowed included a first inning single and a double in the seventh. Holmes struck out at least one batter in each inning, including multiple strikeouts in four innings.
At the plate, the Aggies did all of their damage in the third inning. With one out and Stauder at second, a bunt-single by Belinda Paine turned into a run as the result of a throwing error on the throw to first. Deanna Menapace walked, stole second and scored on another throwing error to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead. Rachel Miller drove in the next run on a fielder's choice, and Holmes capped off the scoring with an RBI-single.
UC Davis broke out on top of Illinois (3-1) in the top of the third. Kelly Harman scored with two outs after advancing from second to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a fielding error. The Fighting Illini countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Danielle Zymkowitz connected for two-run double with two outs. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game.
UC Davis is next in action Wednesday when it hosts San Jose State at La Rue Field.
