DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior Alex Sotomayor and sophomore Isabella Leon each finished with three hits on the day, as the UC Davis softball team battled a pair of top-15 foes on day two of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., falling to No. 12 Tennessee, 6-0, and No. 7 Arizona, 6-1, at the Tempe Sports Complex.

The Aggies moved to 1-2 overall on the year with Saturday's results heading into the final day of the tournament. UC Davis is scheduled to take on UTEP at 11:30 a.m., and a receiving votes San Diego State squad at 2 p.m., local time on Sunday (Feb. 11).

Nationally ranked Tennessee slugged three home runs to account for the only runs of the day, while pitchers Caylan Arnold and Matty Moss combined on a three-hit shutout en route to the 6-0 victory.

After a rough start that saw the Volunteers put up a pair of three-run innings, the Aggies settled down behind sophomore Frankie Mendoza (0-1), who was making her first career start in the circle after entering in relief in nine games last season. The biological sciences major tossed 4 2/3 shutout innings the rest of the way, allowing just two Tennessee hits.

Freshman Riley Siegel collected her first career hit -- a single through the left side in the fifth -- while Leon, a cognitive science major, and Sotomayor, a human development major, added base hits in the second and sixth innings. However, a three-run shot by Chelsea Seggern in the first, followed by a two-run blast by Scarlet McSwain and a solo home run by Ashley Morgan in the third, put the game out of reach.

Arnold (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing just one run while striking out four, while Moss struck out seven over four innings for Tennessee.

Sotomayor was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Leon finished 2-for-4 to help power an eight-hit day by the Aggie offense, which hung tough with the top-10 Wildcats before Arizona pulled away for a 6-1 victory in the second game of the day.

The Wildcats pounced early with four runs in the first two innings, but UC Davis was able to avoid any further damage, stranding the bases loaded in the first and leaving 13 Arizona baserunners on for the game. The Aggies finally got on the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth, pulling a run back on senior Ashley Lotoszynski's RBI single to left, scoring Sotomayor, who doubled to lead off the inning.

With her RBI, Lotoszynski, an agriculture and environmental education major, moved to within one of Christa Castello's Division I record of 72 set last season.

The score remained that way until the sixth, when Arizona inched away with a pair of runs, but the Aggies continued to apply pressure, putting a pair on the seventh thanks to an error on a bunt by human development major Alyse Rojas and a Leon infield single to the circle before a strikeout and ground ball ended the game.

UC Davis had its chances against the perennial powers, stranding 11 runners on base, including two in the third on a walk to Sotomayor and a single by freshman neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major Aly Gomonet, two in the fourth after singles by managerial economics major Caroline Figueroa and Maddie Rojas, and two more in the sixth on a walk to Maddie Rojas and a single by Sotomayor.

Sophomore right-hander Katie Kibby (0-1), a managerial economics major, struck out three in the complete-game effort, allowing five earned on 11 hits. Alyssa Denham (1-0) took home the victory, allowing just the one run and striking out five.
