CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - By scoring runs in each of the first four innings of Sunday's tournament finale vs. Utah Valley at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, UC Davis ended its weekend in the desert with a 4-3 victory. That game capped a day that began with a morning matchup against No. 6/5 UCLA, a contest the Bruins won by a 9-1 score in six innings.

UC Davis will experience a quick turnaround because the first of two Causeway Cup contests will take place at Sacramento State on Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m. UC Davis will enter that rivalry game with a 4-3 overall record. After facing the Aggies, UCLA improved to 9-1 while the Wolverines fell to 0-4.

A five-pitch walk, drawn by Francesca Mendoza with the bases loaded, allowed Brianna Warner, who opened the game with a bunt single, to score her team's first run vs. Utah Valley. In the top of the second, that lead doubled thanks to Christa Castello's ground out, which allowed Alex Sotomayor to score.

Sotomayor reached base with her single to short, beating a throw from UVU's Kirsten Andersen.

Castello's RBI was her second of the day; it was she who drove in the Aggies' run earlier in the day against UCLA with a double to left center that scored Warner. As was the case against the Wolverines, Warner opened her team's matchup against UCLA with a single, and scored in the first inning.

A leadoff single up the middle from Ashley Lotoszynski became the Aggies' third run, in as many innings, when Sotomayor grounded out to second three batters later. Before she trotted home from third, Lotoszynski advanced from first, to second, on a wild pitch, then took third after UVU starter Bailey Moore walked back-to-back batters.

Another inning-opening hit in the fourth -- this time it was a double from Castello -- that led to UC Davis' final run. Advancing to third on Alexis Carney's grounder to short, Lotoszynski drove in her teammate to score when she smacked a single back to the circle.

Even though Utah Valley managed to pull within one when it scored three runs, on four hits in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Katelyn Kibby ended the frame by forcing the Wolverines to hit fly balls to right and center field.

Once Sara Cadona recorded the final three outs on a pop fly to second, a ground out to third and a swinging strikeout, the sophomore recorded UC Davis' first save of the season, and Kibby collected her third win of the year.
