SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Davis scored twice in the first inning of Tuesday's non-conference game at Shea Stadium, tacked on another run in the fourth and fifth innings, saw its defense make some outstanding plays both around the diamond, and in the outfield all afternoon long to defeat Sacramento State, 4-3, in the first of two Causeway Cup games scheduled in as many weeks.

The Hornets will head to La Rue Field next Wednesday to compete in this season's series finale.

UC Davis will head to this weekend's Bulldog Classic with a 5-3 record; Sacramento State will continue its season at 2-3.

"Defense won this game for us today," said head coach Erin Thorpe. "With our offense, and the type of pitching we have, this is a dangerous team when all three areas click."

Freshman Katie Kibby picked up her fourth win of the season, threw five full innings, fanned three batters and only allowed five hits before sophomore Sara Cadona earned her second save, in as many opportunities, by pitching the final two innings.

Celina Matthias suffered the loss for Sacramento State team that competed in its first home event of the season.

Brianna Warner opened the game with a single to center, then placed herself in scoring position by stealing second. The Aggies' centerfielder advanced to third on a single to right center from Christa Castello, then marched home after Shelby Johnson's throw sailed past her teammate at third and landed inside the Hornets' dugout.

With Castello now standing on third thanks to that error, Ashley Lotoszynski drove her home on a bunt single down the first base line.

In the fourth inning, Lotoszynski hit a one-out single to left field and eventually scored after Alex Sotomayor hit a line-drive single to left.

Lotoszynski led all Aggies with two hits, in her three at bats, scored a run and drove in another.

In the top of the fifth, UC Davis scored its final run of the afternoon when a throwing error from third baseman Jade Arslanian allowed Lotoszynski to reach base, and Peters, who led off the inning with a strikeout but reached first on a Sacramento State wild pitch, to score.

UC Davis will enjoy a day off before heading to Fresno State to compete in this weekend's Bulldog Classic. After Friday's tournament opener vs. Idaho State, the Aggies' final four games of the weekend will take place against ranked competition.

"This is going to be a tough weekend, but we are ready to accept this challenge," Thorpe said.
